ChatGPT Advertising Launches in South Africa: What Businesses Need to Know
ChatGPT advertising has launched in South Africa. Discover what it means for businesses and how Net Age is exploring this new advertising opportunity.
ChatGPT advertising has arrived in South Africa, opening up a new advertising opportunity for local businesses. At Net Age, we're excited about the launch and what it could mean for digital marketing.
For months, clients have been asking when they would be able to advertise on ChatGPT, how it might work, and whether it could eventually sit alongside Google Ads and other established channels.
The wait is finally coming to an end. On 21 October 2026, ChatGPT advertising expanded to South Africa. As access rolls out, advertisers can begin exploring a new way of reaching people during AI-assisted research and discovery.
At Net Age, we've been following developments in artificial intelligence and AI-driven search closely. We're looking forward to exploring what this new channel can offer businesses.
Why ChatGPT Advertising Matters
People increasingly use AI assistants to research products, compare services, and discover companies. We see this shift in website analytics across our own clients.
In some cases, ChatGPT has generated approximately ten times as much referral traffic as individual competing AI assistants such as Gemini or Perplexity. That's an observation from our client data, not a claim about the entire market. It helps explain why we're paying attention.
Until now, businesses interested in being found through ChatGPT have largely focused on organic AI visibility: whether their brands are mentioned or recommended in answers. Paid advertising introduces another opportunity.
How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?
ChatGPT advertisements are separately labelled sponsored placements, distinct from the assistant's answers. Advertising does not buy influence over organic ChatGPT responses.
This distinction matters. A brand might advertise to reach a relevant audience, while separately working to improve the quality, accessibility, and usefulness of its website content for organic AI discovery.
For advertisers, the questions are familiar: can this channel reach relevant prospects, generate qualified traffic, and produce leads or sales at a sustainable cost?
Who Will See the Ads?
ChatGPT advertising is intended for eligible Free and Go users. Plus and Pro subscribers do not see ads.
That makes audience composition an important question. A person's subscription tier does not reliably indicate income or buying power. We'll be interested in the actual intent, engagement and conversion behaviour of users who encounter ads, rather than making assumptions about them.
What Will ChatGPT Advertising Cost?
Advertiser costs will depend on campaign setup, bidding, competition and available targeting. Early indicative costs should not be mistaken for reliable South African benchmarks.
For businesses, the useful numbers will be cost per qualified lead, cost per sale, and return on advertising investment. Clicks and impressions are useful diagnostics, but they are not the final objective.
As the platform develops, advertisers will need to test budgets carefully, check tracking, and compare outcomes against established channels.
What About Organic Visibility in ChatGPT?
Paid advertising and organic AI visibility are separate. A sponsored placement does not guarantee that ChatGPT will mention a business in its answer.
Through GoGee Insights, we're developing AI visibility tracking tools to help investigate whether brands appear in responses to relevant questions and how they compare with competitors. This provides a different perspective from paid campaign reporting.
Understanding both forms of visibility could become increasingly useful as conversational discovery grows.
What'S Next?
It's early days for ChatGPT advertising in South Africa. Advertisers still need to learn how campaign options, targeting, costs and conversion performance play out in practice.
At Net Age, we're excited to explore the platform, apply the measurement principles we've developed across other digital channels, and share what we learn as evidence becomes available.
ChatGPT advertising has arrived in South Africa. The interesting question now is how effectively it will work for South African businesses.
